American Painted Round-Top Camelback Steamer Trunk, Late 19th Century
Item Details
This late 19th-century American steamer trunk features a traditional rounded ‘camelback’ lid designed for transcontinental travel. The chest is constructed of a wood carcass clad in sheet metal, reinforced by arched oak hardwood slats. The exterior is accented with decorative cast iron hardware, including stamped metal slat clamps and a central heavy-duty lock hasp. While originally produced with patterned or lithographed metal, this example has been historically overpainted in a monochromatic cream-white finish. The trunk retains its original leather side straps, though they exhibit significant age-related wear. The interior is open, lacking the original removable tray, and shows the natural pine planking of the carcass. This piece serves as a characteristic example of Victorian-era luggage, prioritizing structural durability for heavy transit.
