Set of Four Thonet Style Bentwood Side Chairs, Early 20th Century
Item Details
This assembled set of four side chairs is executed in the classic steam-bentwood style popularized by Michael Thonet in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Three chairs feature arched top rails over three undulating ‘wavy’ horizontal back slats, while the fourth chair presents a fan-back design with five vertical spindles. All chairs possess contoured plywood seats inset into bentwood circular aprons, supported by splayed legs reinforced with curved side braces. The construction utilizes a combination of traditional wood screws and early metal reinforcement brackets visible on the undersides. The set exhibits a dark-stained finish with extensive authentic patina and wear from long-term handling.
