American Victorian Style Child's Slant-Front Desk and Rocking Chair
Item Details
This antique child’s furniture set consists of a slant-front writing desk and a coordinating rocking chair, dating to the mid-to-late 19th century. The desk is constructed with a hinged lid that opens to reveal a built-in slate writing board, a feature designed for pedagogical use in a domestic or schoolhouse setting. It is supported by a sturdy X-stretcher base with decorative scalloped detailing on the side aprons. The accompanying rocking chair features a decorative pierced back splat with a carved circular motif and turned front legs. Both pieces are finished in a dark natural stain that highlights the varied grain of the mixed hardwoods. This set represents a functional example of American vernacular furniture, specifically scaled for a child’s proportions and reinforced over time for continued use.
