American Victorian Pine Spindle-Leg Desk and Carved Walnut Caned Chair
Item Details
This antique Victorian-era writing set includes a pine desk and a carved walnut side chair, both dating to the mid-to-late 19th century. The desk is characterized by its high arched gallery backsplash and a functional writing surface over two small drawers. The drawers are notable for their authentic hand-cut dovetail joinery and original wooden pull (one missing). It is supported by four elegantly turned spindle legs connected by a decorative scalloped stretcher. The accompanying chair is crafted from walnut, featuring a sophisticated pierced crest rail with trefoil and foliate carvings. The seat is hand-caned in a traditional hexagonal pattern, supported by curved stiles. This set exemplifies the American vernacular furniture of the period, blending utilitarian pine construction with the more decorative elements of the Eastlake style.
