Late Victorian Walnut Full-Size Bed with Fretwork Panels, Late 19th Century
Item Details
This late 19th-century American bed frame is constructed of solid walnut and highly figured veneers, showcasing the transitional aesthetic of the Eastlake period. The set includes a tall, architectural headboard and a lower coordinating footboard, both of which are defined by central panels featuring an intricate dark-stained geometric fretwork design. This ‘linked oval’ motif provides a striking contrast against the lighter walnut ground. The headboard is further embellished with a carved foliate shell-form crest at the top rail and incised foliate scrolls at the corner shoulders. The bed retains its original side rails and wooden slats, utilizing a standard period hook joinery system for assembly. Supported by tapered, reeded-effect feet, the frame rests on its original small-diameter iron casters.
