This monumental Napoleon III style buffet is a sophisticated mid-20th-century example of Continental cabinetmaking designed for a grand dining interior. The rectangular case is finished in rich mahogany veneers and capped with a substantial slab of green marble featuring a complex double-contoured edge. The front is centered by an exuberant gilt bronze (ormolu) mount depicting a classical gorgon mask surrounded by military trophies, standards, and oak leaves. This heroic centerpiece is flanked by fluted pilasters tied with bronze ribbons and recessed mahogany panels with further gilded ornamentation. The sideboard stands on four robust bronze-doré lion’s paw feet resting on circular plinths. While functioning as a utilitarian storage and serving piece, the excessive ornamentation and high-style silhouette characterize it as a decorative masterpiece in the Empire tradition.
