North Italian (Piedmontese) Carved Giltwood and Polychrome Grand Canape
Item Details
An 18th-century North Italian grand canape of significant scale. The frame is hand-carved with a serpentine ‘en gondole’ backrest and scrolling manchettes (arm pads). The apron is deeply scalloped and features centralized shell carvings and foliate sprigs, supported by six cabriole legs ending in scrolled feet. The frame retains an early (likely 19th-century refreshed) cream paint finish with significant parcel-gilt accents. The structure is pinned-tenon construction consistent with 18th-century European cabinetry.
