Middle Eastern Inlaid Khatam Coffee Table, 20th Century

Item Details

This round coffee table is a striking example of Middle Eastern decorative arts, featuring exhaustive geometric and floral inlays in the Khatam tradition. The tabletop is centered by a complex radiating sunburst motif, further embellished with inlaid mother-of-pearl discs. Concentric bands of marquetry showcase interlocking star patterns and scrolling vines, framed by a distinctive checkered parquetry rim. The table is elevated on six cabriole-style legs, each detailed with linear stringing and traditional carved brackets at the apron. While exhibiting the natural age-related separation of hand-fitted veneers, the piece retains its intricate visual texture and serves as a testament to the labor-intensive marquetry techniques of the region.
