Herman Perlman Etched and Sandblasted Art Glass Sculpture

Item Details

An etched and sandblasted art glass sculpture by listed artist, Herman Perlman (Polish American Sculptor and Caricaturist, 1904-1995). The piece is signed by artist, see photo. The wood veneered base has a light feature inset on the bottom and worked when tested. The artist early career was spent as a caricaturist with ‘The Washington Post’ first as a photo ‘retoucher’ and than asked to draw caricatures of theatrical and other important visitors to Washington DC. The National Portrait Gallery has many of these drawings. After a time in Hollywood working for Disney and a five year stint as a Grocery Store owner, Perlman was introduced to carved glass techniques in 1949. His largest glass sculpture was completed in 1955, The Virginia War Memorial, in Richmond VA. It is a glass wall of 110 feet long by 30 feet tall with over 11,000 Virginians who died in World War II and the Korean War. He was also commissioned by President Truman to make glass panels for five White House bathrooms.
