A distinguished portraitist and landscape painter, Richard Jack began his prolific career in England before becoming Canada’s first officially commissioned war artist during World War I. Trained at the York School of Art and the Académie Julian in Paris, he achieved early success at the Royal Academy, eventually earning election as a Royal Academician (RA). Jack was celebrated for his ability to capture the dignity of his subjects, including members of the British Royal Family, as well as his expansive, atmospheric views of the Canadian Rockies after his move to Montreal in the 1930s. His body of work serves as a vital bridge between Edwardian tradition and the emerging national identity of 20th-century Canadian art.
