Victorian Rococo Revival Carved Walnut Side Chair, Circa 1860–1880
Item Details
This Victorian Rococo Revival side chair is constructed from walnut and features a prominent balloon-style backrest crowned with a hand-carved foliate and C-scroll crest rail. The frame exhibits elegant finger-molding that flows from the crest down through the stiles and into the curved seat rail. The chair is currently upholstered in an olive-drab velvet secured by a decorative brass tack border along the seat. It is supported by two front cabriole legs with scrolled knees and two raked rear saber legs. The visible joinery and carved details are typical of late 19th-century mass-produced parlor furniture. While the structural frame remains intact, the textile components and wood finish show significant signs of age-related wear and environmental exposure.
