Contemporary artist Oluwakemi Omowaire was born in Nigeria in 1984 and now lives and works in Atlanta. Omowaire is a self-taught artist, though her formal education in psychology is an underlying presence in her creative work. Omowaire describes her art as “a poetic documentary of women.” Her figurative paintings are portraiture of the human condition depicting strength, resilience, faith, and most importantly, courage. Omowaire’s paintings extend beyond the physical qualities of her subjects to the emotional complexity of women’s path to personal liberty. Before moving to the United States, Omowaire was a member of the Society of Nigerian Artists. Since then, her work has been exhibited in Nigeria and the U.S., including the 2018 show The Art of Nigerian Women: Sisters at the Columbus Metropolitan Library.
