Giuseppe Gabani Orientalist Style Equine Watercolor Painting, 19th Century

Item Details

Giuseppe Gabani (Italian, 1846 – 1899)
Orientalist equine scene, 19th century
Watercolor on paper
Signed and inscribed “Roma” to lower right corner

A master of the Roman school, Giuseppe Gabani was celebrated for his evocative Orientalist paintings that captured the vibrant spirit of North African life. Trained at the Academy of San Luca, he utilized a luminous palette and precise brushwork to depict bustling marketplaces and nomadic caravans with striking atmospheric depth. His work is distinguished by a keen ethnographic eye and a romanticized treatment of light, characteristic of the late 19th-century European fascination with the Mediterranean and beyond. Today, Gabani is regarded as a premier chronicler of the exotic genre scenes that defined his era.
