Anne Straus is a versatile multimedia artist based in Cincinnati, Ohio, celebrated for her ability to bridge the gap between ancient mythology and modern intuition. Drawing deep inspiration from her travels to West Africa and prehistoric sites, Straus utilizes a universal language of organic geometry—triangles, stripes, and squares—to create works that feel both tribal and timeless. While her decades-long career has spanned welding and jewelry, she is most renowned for her evocative fiber sculptures and intricate ‘Yarn Paintings’ that explore the collective unconscious and the spiritual connection between humanity and nature.
Her textile practice often centers on the female archetype and the whimsy of the natural world, ranging from her Goddess series to vibrant, hand-stitched depictions of birds. A graduate of Mt. Holyoke College and a longtime member of the Craft Guild of Greater Cincinnati, Straus has seen her work featured in numerous juried exhibitions and galleries, including the Ohio Designer Craftsmen ‘Best of’ showcases. Each piece is a testament to her philosophy of ‘painting with the eye of the heart,’ resulting in tactile, soulful art that resonates with collectors of contemporary craft and folk-inspired traditions.
’ From welding rusty tools to build a sculpture, to building layers of colored wax to create an encaustic painting, I gain satisfaction and pleasure from watching my pieces grow into a balanced work of art. Some of my images are real and some are imagined, such as symbols from my unconscious. I make masks to represent spiritual beings and/or ancestors involved in ceremony. I use travel as a way to explore other cultures visually. I seek to understand and honor the vision of others through the use of organic geometry, seeking the patterns and shapes that I use as a universal language. ’
