Perhaps most famed for her photographs of schoolgirls, Justine Kurland is a fine art photographer based in New York City. She received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts and her MFA from Yale University. Kurland first gained public recognition for her large tableau pictures of neo-romantic landscapes featuring adolescent girls, which were exhibited in the 1999 group show Another Girl, Another Planet at New York’s Van Doren Waxter gallery. Inspired by her own experience as a runaway child, Kurland went on to publish 69 photos of adolescent girls in her series Girl Pictures, for which she staged girls in urban and wilderness settings, appearing as runaways but also independent. Kurland has stated that some of her other influences include Julia Margaret Cameron’s photographs, 19th-century picturesque landscapes, utopian imagery, and her childhood fairytales. Throughout her career, she has participated in many exhibitions and published several books including Spirit West (2000), Another Girl, Another Planet (2001), and most recently Highway Kind (2016).
