Jesse Philip (or Phil) Olmes was born in Oil City, Pennsylvania, and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania at Edinboro. In 1944 he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, when he was hired to be the art teacher at Norwood High School, a position he held until his retirement in 1972. He earned a master’s degree from Ohio State University in 1950 and also was awarded fellowships to study art at Columbia and Yale Universities in 1956 and 1957. Olmes was a noted watercolor artist who often exhibited in Cincinnati-area galleries. After his retirement Olmes taught painting at the Cincinnati Woman’s Club and was a member of the Cincinnati Art Club. Olmes was also a musician who played the trumpet, trombone, French horn, and cornet in the Phil Olmes Over-the-Hill Gang, a Dixieland jazz band who performed around Cincinnati and on the Betty Blake riverboat.

- uneven toning to sheet; upper edge of sheet misaligned to mat; light handling wear to frame; tears and stains to paper backing.
