Item Details
Artist unknown (Northwest Coast)
Polychrome painted carved wood
Late 19th to Early 20th Century (c. 1890–1920)
A substantial Northwest Coast polychrome carved wooden halibut fishing float, likely Tlingit, dating to the turn of the 20th century. The ovoid cedar body is carved in high relief, depicting a grinning spirit face—possibly a Land Otter or Sculpin—characterized by wide, ovoid eyes with circular pupils, heavy black eyebrows detailed with incised hatching, and a broad, toothed mouth painted in trade vermilion. The sides are accented with painted green and red formline U-shapes. A vertical suspension hole runs through the center for cord attachment. Displays a rich, oxidized patina and evidence of genuine maritime use.
