Impressive 19th Century Chinese Hand-Carved Ivory Sewing Box

Item Details

An impressive 19th century Chinese hand-carved ivory sewing box dating to the period of the Qing Dynasty, depicting two elaborately carved Imperial dragons amidst fire and smoke with an oval nameplate to center on the top panel, detached from the frame. The sides depict a village scene with figures that appear to be scholars, Chinese pagodas, wisteria blossoms, and tree blossoms with bamboo carved on the corners, a footed base and carved bats for the front feet. The two feet in the back appear to be unfinished although with the same outline. The burgundy velvet interior has a top pullout tray with delicate brass handles on either side, also lined in burgundy velvet. There is a key hole, although key is not present.

  • International law prohibits the exportation of ivory, the winning bidder must, therefore, be a United States resident.
