Provenance inscribed to the backing paper
Description: An original oil on canvas landscape by American artist Douglas Arthur Teed. The composition features an expansive pastoral scene with a prominent, weathered tree in the left foreground and a figure tending to livestock in the center-right. The background depicts a hazy, sun-drenched mountain range and architectural ruins or a tower under a soft, clouded sky. The work displays Teed’s characteristic Tonalist influence and impressionistic application of paint. Signed ‘Douglas Arthur Teed’ in the lower right. Housed in a heavy, period-style gilded gesso and wood frame.
Attribute Research Findings
Collector Identity: ‘H.C. Winter’ does not appear in public records as a nationally famous industrialist (like his neighbors the Rockefellers or Mathers), suggesting he was likely a successful private professional or local businessman.
Address Significance: 2021 Euclid Avenue is located on Cleveland’s historic ‘Millionaires’ Row.’ While the original structure is likely gone (the address now corresponds to the Cleveland State University Music & Communication building), in the early 20th century, this street was one of the most prestigious and affluent residential addresses in America.
Provenance Note: The combination of a ‘Schwartz Galleries, NYC’ label (a known, reputable dealer active in the 1920s–40s) and a residential address on Euclid Avenue confirms this painting was originally purchased as a high-status luxury item. This ‘context’ helps validate the painting’s authenticity and quality.
