Jacobo & María Ángeles Zapotec "Dancing Coyote" Copal Wood Figure, 2005

Item Details

Description: A carved and polychrome-painted wooden figure by renowned Oaxacan artists Jacobo and María Ángeles. Titled ‘Coyote Danzante #3’ (Dancing Coyote), the figure depicts a stylized coyote in a seated, dynamic posture with the head turned rearward. The surface is densely decorated with fine Zapotec-style geometric patterns (grecas) and iconography in earth tones, black, and white. The dorsal side features a painted narrative medallion titled ‘La Tortuga y la Serpiente Encantada’ (The Turtle and the Enchanted Serpent), depicting a figure with aquatic motifs. Signed on the underside: ‘Autor: Jacobo y Maria Angeles, Sn. Martin Tilcajete, Ocotlan, Oax, Mex. 2005’ with the studio’s workshop spiral insignia.
Artist Prestige: Jacobo and María Ángeles are widely considered the premier artists in the Oaxacan wood carving tradition. Their workshop in San Martín Tilcajete set the standard for the ‘fine’ alebrije style, characterized by the use of natural pigments (developed through extensive research into pre-Hispanic techniques) and Zapotec iconography rather than the bright acrylics and fantasy shapes used by other carvers. Their work gained massive international recognition after they were consulted for the visual design of the Disney/Pixar film Coco.
