Born in Massachusetts, Howard Storm is a distinguished painter and educator who served as Chair of the Art Department at Northern Kentucky University for twenty years. After earning his MFA from the University of California, Berkeley, Storm’s early career was defined by an intellectual worldview focused on academic and professional achievement. However, while leading a faculty art tour in Paris in 1985, he suffered a life-threatening medical emergency. His subsequent near-death experience – a journey described as a transition from darkness into an encounter with transformative light – completely reshaped his life, leading him to a new calling as a minister in the United Church of Christ and a missionary.
Today, Storm is a celebrated author best known for his book My Descent Into Death, which chronicles his shift from a secular perspective to one of deep conviction. His artwork serves as a visual extension of this journey, acting as a bridge between the physical and the eternal. Moving away from his earlier focus, his current paintings explore universal themes of love, grace, and the ‘marvel of the world beyond.’ By blending earthly structures with ethereal inspirations, Storm’s work invites viewers of all backgrounds to reflect on the beauty of the human spirit and the profound mystery of our existence.
