Description: Byron Browne (American, 1907-1961) Woman with Palette, 1957. Large oil on canvas. Signed and dated. Abstract Expressionist portrait with Cubist elements. Byron Browne was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists (AAA) and a pivotal figure in the transition from Cubism to Abstract Expressionism in New York. This specific work, Woman with Palette (1957), exemplifies Browne’s late style, often described as ‘Picasso-esque.’ He merged the fractured geometry of Cubism with the loose, energetic brushwork of the New York School. The presence of the ‘palette’ in the subject matter is meta-textual (art about art), which is often desirable to collectors.
