Description: Byron Browne (American, 1907–1961), abstract expressionist mixed media painting on paper, dated 1954. Features a Cubist-influenced head of a woman rendered in fluid white contour lines over a field of blue, black, and peach gouache/casein.
Market Status: Byron Browne is a foundational figure in the American Abstract Artists (AAA) group. This work dates to his mature period where his style shifted from strict geometric abstraction to a more gestural, Abstract Expressionist-adjacent mode, heavily influenced by Picasso’s linear portraits. This era is popular among collectors. The ‘Classical Head’ motif with wreath-like foliage is iconic for Browne. The energetic white line work is a signature technique he employed in the 1950s.
