George II Period Walnut Low Dresser (Dresser Base), 18th Century
Item Details
Description: 18th-Century George II Walnut Low Dresser Base. Circa 1750. An exceptional 94-inch long antique server featuring a four-drawer frieze configuration, raised on cabriole legs with pad feet. Warm patina. Ideal for use as a grand sideboard or serving table.
Construction: Carcass construction with four frieze drawers arranged horizontally. Dovetailed drawer joinery (hand-cut, large pins). Plank top with applied molding.
Style & Origin: The construction (pine secondary wood, hand-cut dovetails) and design (cabriole legs with pad feet) strongly indicate English provincial origin. The wood appears to be Walnut, which is more desirable than Oak for formal dining settings, though it may be a fruitwood stained to resemble walnut. The ‘Low Dresser’ form is traditionally used for serving food (a precursor to the sideboard), making it highly practical for modern use.
