Gayle Porter Hoskins was born in Indiana in 1887, but his family soon after moved to Denver, Colorado. There, Hoskins developed his intimate knowledge of horses and began to practice drawing. In 1901, at the age of 14, Hoskins published his first cartoon in the Denver Post. He continued his studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and worked as a mural designer for the Marshall Field Company. The American illustrator Howard Pyle visited Hoskins’ studio on a trip in Chicago, and invited the young artist to join his school at the Howard Pyle Studios in Delaware. By 1918, Hoskins had become a prominent illustrator publishing works in magazines such as Harper’s Weekly, Cosmopolitan and Good Housekeeping. In the 1930s, he moved beyond print publications to oil paintings of historical subjects and portraits. Throughout his career, Hoskins took opportunities to teach young artists, and even founded the Wilmington Academy of Art in 1928, teaching courses such as illustration, life drawing, and costume sketch. Hoskins was also a founding member of the Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts, and Wilmington Sketch Club. Gayle Porter Hoskins continued to produce art and teach until his passing in 1962.
