Illuminated Doctoral Diploma from the University of Pavia (c. 1680)

Item Details

Format: Manuscript on vellum (or heavy handmade paper), comprised of multiple leaves bound in a quarto format.
Content: A formal Doctorate of Laws (Iuris Utriusque, Civil and Canon Law) conferred by the University of Pavia. The text names Carolus Franciscus Marinus (Carlo Francesco Marino) as the recipient. The document cites Lorenzo Trotti (Laurentius Trotti) as Bishop of Pavia and references university officials including Jacobus Phrygius and Ioannes Baptista Cribellus. The script is a legible humanist cursive with headers in Roman capitals, featuring some gold highlighting.
Binding: Contemporary Italian full brown morocco (or calf). The boards are lavishly decorated in the Baroque style with elaborate gilt tooling, featuring a central oval medallion surrounded by radiating ‘fan’ motifs (a l’eventail) at the center and corners, enclosed by decorative roll-tool borders. The pastedowns feature combed marble paper.
Accessories: Attached via braided hemp cords is an original metal skippet (likely tin or tinned iron) containing a large red wax seal. The seal depicts an ecclesiastical or university scene with seated figures under architectural arches.
