A first edition set of Colonel Thomas Thornton’s Sporting Tour Through Various Parts of France (1806). Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, London. Quarto. Illustrated with upwards of eighty plates, including a stipple-engraved frontispiece portrait of the author with a hawk, engraved title pages, and numerous aquatint scenic and architectural plates. Notable plates include the fold-out Chateau de Jaegersbourg, Chateau at Versailles from the Terrace, and View of Rouen, as well as sporting subjects like the French Diligence.
The text is presented as a series of letters to the Earl of Darlington. Bound in 19th-century half-leather over marbled paper boards with gilt lettering and decoration on the spine. Provenance: From the library of Henry and Louise Yeiser, bearing their pictorial bookplate.
