Binding & Format: Full red straight-grain morocco (goatskin) leather, typical of the French Empire style. The covers feature an elaborate gilt-tooled border with floral corner pieces and a central gilt decorative motif (a floral basket/urn, rather than Imperial Arms). The spine is decorated with gilt bands and lettering. All edges are gilt.
Description: A First Edition example of Napoleonic propaganda poetry celebrating the birth of Napoleon II (The King of Rome). Published in Paris at the height of the First Empire, this volume contains poems and odes by Joseph Lingay, including Rome Ancienne et Rome Moderne. The volume is distinguished by its period ‘Empire’ luxury binding in red morocco, a style favored for presentation copies of the era. It retains the original stipple engravings, including portraits of the Imperial family: Napoleon I on horseback, Empress Marie Louise with the young King of Rome, and a separate portrait of the infant King.
