István Horkay (born 1945) is a distinguished Hungarian painter, printmaker, and digital artist whose work bridges the gap between traditional fine arts and modern electrography. After graduating from the School of Fine Arts in Budapest, Horkay earned his Master of Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow and completed further studies at the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen and the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. He studied under influential masters, including the renowned theater director Tadeusz Kantor, ultimately receiving diplomas in Graphic Arts, Painting, and Film Animation.
A member of the Alliance Graphique International (AGI) and the Hungarian Electrographic Art Association (HEAA), Horkay’s aesthetic is defined by the ‘epitomic’ fragment. His work explores the tension between ‘sense-wholeness’ and the ‘scars’ of history, using incisions into surfaces and signs to reveal the hidden complexities of human memory. He currently lives and works in Budapest.
