Japanese Meiji Period Champlevé Enamel Bronze Jardinière

Item Details

Description: A heavy cast-bronze jardiniere decorated in the Champlevé technique (enamel filling cast recesses). The body features a high-relief ‘sea wave’ pattern integral to the casting, surrounding a central register with opposing three-clawed dragons and a phoenix (fenghuang/ho-o) bird. The shoulder is encircled by a stylized floral lappet border with lobed reserves. The wide, flat mouth rim is plain, undecorated bronze.
