Joanna Quiner, a native of Beverly, Massachusetts, tried her hand at sculpting later in life at around age 40. The bust of liberal thinker, abolitionist, Unitarian, and civil servant Robert Rantoul was her very first, and was also the first sculpture by a woman to be shown at the Boston Athenæum, displayed in 1846.
This casting is believed to be one of only a few surviving examples of this bust.
