Description: A late 19th-century neoclassical marble portrait relief plaque by American sculptor Horatio Stone. The work depicts the profile of Mrs. S.C. Haudley, presented in the classical manner with her hair styled in an elaborate, textured chignon. The sitter is carved in low-to-medium relief against a smooth, oval concave ground. The reverse is inscribed with the artist’s signature, date (1874), and sitter identification. Stone, known for his monumental sculptures of American historical figures in the U.S. Capitol, executed this private commission one year prior to his death.
Artist Significance: Horatio Stone is a historically significant American sculptor, best known for his federal commissions (including Alexander Hamilton and John Hancock), currently residing in the U.S. Capitol.
