Brown mud cast in wood frame
Brown mud gathered from Florence flood residue, 1966.
A mid-20th-century Florentine relief medallion, cast from residue mud gathered following the 1966 Flood of the Arno. The large circular plaque features a high-relief profile portrait of the Anglo-Italian poet Louisa Grace Bartolini (1818–1865), depicted in a Neoclassical style with an elaborate coiffure and period dress. The surface is finished with a faux-bronze green patina and housed within a gilt and painted wood frame. The reverse bears handwritten inscriptions identifying the subject and the origin of the material (‘Brown mud 1966 Florence Flood Residue’). A unique historical artifact commemorating the preservation efforts of post-flood Florence.
