Large Neoclassical Carved Marble Portrait Roundel of a Lady, 19th Century
Item Details
Description: A substantial circular plaque (tondo) composed of bisque and white statuary marble (likely Carrara), featuring a high-relief profile portrait of a woman facing right. The subject is depicted in the Historicist style, evoking Renaissance nobility, with an elaborate braided updo and a high-standing collar (resembling a Medici collar or ruff). The carving shows soft modeling characteristic of the late Victorian era. The reverse is unfinished with a rough-hewn surface and includes an embedded metal loop for suspension.
