The Civitates Orbis Terrarum was created under the auspices of Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg and engraved by Hogenberg and Simon Novellanus (or van den Neuval). This collection of maps is the earliest systematic city atlas; published in six parts between 1572 and 1617. It became one of the best-selling works in the last quarter of the 16th century and has been reprinted many times without much alteration and usually without a date. After the _Civitates_was completed in 1617, the engraving plates were passed through a succession of printers who reprinted the maps until the end of the 18th century when the plates could no longer provide good impressions. For a detailed overview of the Civitates, see Cornelis Koeman, comp. and ed., _Atlantes Neerlandici: Bibliography of Terrestrial, Maritime, and Celestial Atlases and Pilot Books, Published in the Netherlands up to 1880, volume 2 (Amsterdam: Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, 1967), pages 10–14.
