This bronze portrait of William Henry Seward, Secretary of State (1861–69), was conceived by William H. Miller, owner of William H. Miller & Sons Foundry, in Providence, Rhode Island. During the Civil War in 1864, Miller commissioned Maine sculptor, Franklin B. Simmons to produce a series of bronze portrait reliefs featuring Abraham Lincoln, his cabinet, and significant Union generals. Simmons traveled to Washington D.C.where he reportedly drew from life all or most of the distinguished persons he depicted in bronze. Accounts vary on the final number of portraits in the series, with some naming 24, while others list 31. Titled the National Bronze Picture Gallery, the series was finished in 1865. According to the Union League of Philadelphia, the portraits were ‘exhibited in several northern cities, including New York City, Chicago, and Philadelphia, where the medallions were displayed at the ’Great Fair in Honor of the Soldiers and Sailors Home’ held at the Academy of Music between October 23 and November 4, 1865.’

Historical Relevance of Subject: William Henry Seward is a highly collectible historical figure, known for his role in the ‘Team of Rivals,’ his survival of an assassination attempt on the same night Lincoln was killed, and the purchase of Alaska (’Seward’s Folly’). This historical weight keeps his value stable compared to less prominent generals in the series.
