Jack Meanwell (1919–2005) was a Canadian-American painter and educator known for his expressive abstract landscapes and figurative works. Born in Winnipeg and raised in Windsor, Ontario, he began his formal training at the Detroit Art Academy and the Society of Arts and Crafts during the Great Depression, focusing on commercial art before serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. A short-lived advertising career with Ford and Chrysler led him to seek deeper creative fulfillment and in 1947 he relocated with his family to Cincinnati, Ohio. There, he fully embraced his calling, painting and teaching for over 25 years at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky University. His bold use of color and energetic brushwork earned him wide acclaim, with works held in public and corporate collections across North America, including the Cincinnati Art Museum. Meanwell remains one of the region’s most highly collected painters and is often associated with his friend and fellow Cincinnati artist, Paul Chidlaw.
