Thomas Corwin Lindsay was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1839. He started his art career before receiving formal training, when he opened a studio which brought his work to the attention of the Cincinnati community. His practice would later grow to exhibiting at H&S Pogue’s Department Store and various expositions. In 1865, Lindsay sold his paintings to finance a trip to Europe. He spent the next four years studying at academies in Paris as well as the The Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in Germany. Upon the completion of his studies, Lindsay returned to Cincinnati where he would remain for the rest of his life. His compositions turned from northeastern landscapes to pastoral and livestock scenes. Lindsay exhibited his work at the Ohio Mechanics’ Institute, the Cincinnati Industrial Exposition, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Cincinnati Art Club of which he was a founding member. Lindsay’s work is held in private and public collections across the country, and he remains an integral figure of the Cincinnati art scene.
