Frits Thaulow (1847–1906) was a Norwegian Impressionist painter known for his luminous, naturalistic landscapes. Born in Christiania (now Oslo), he studied in Denmark and Germany before traveling to Skagen in 1879 to paint marine scenes. After gaining recognition in Norway, he moved to France in 1892, where he befriended artists like Rodin and Monet. Favoring small towns over Paris, Thaulow became celebrated for his masterful treatment of light on water, especially in river and creek scenes. His achievements earned him induction into the French Legion of Honor and numerous other awards.

Condition

- canvas lined; craquelure across painting with scattered, wispy patches of overpainting; yellowing to pigments; tear to painting lower right; abrasions and discolorations to frame; slight separation at frame joints; keys glued into place.
