Paul Sawyier, born in Madison County, Kentucky in 1865, is one of the few impressionist painters in the region. At a young age Sawyier and his family moved to Frankfort, Kentucky where his artistic talent began to become apparent. Studying under Thomas S. Nobel at the Cincinnati Art Academy Sawyier later moved to New York City to further his artistic training. Sawyier was introduced to impressionism during the 1893 Chicago World Fair and became one of the first American proponents of the movement. Held in many private collections ( as the artist created over 3,000 works in his lifetime) Paul Sawyier’s work was brought together for a 65 painting exhibition at the University of Northern Kentucky in 2012.
