Raoul André Ulmann (French, 1867–1941). Windmill and Cottage at Dusk (Canal et moulin), circa 1890–1910. Oil on board. Signed ‘R. A. Ulmann’ to the lower right. The composition depicts a Dutch-style windmill and an adjacent cottage at the edge of a waterway, silhouetted against a dramatic, cloudy sky at sunset. The atmospheric light and composition reflect the artist’s engagement with the Barbizon and Hague School traditions.
Condition
- visible indentations along edges of painting, likely from previous framing; paint loss to upper right corner; some spots of overpainting throughout clouds; horizon line, roof of farmhouse, and trees; abrasions to frame.
