Corinthian Yacht Club Marblehead, Massachusetts, ‘Cow Boy Pool 1918 Runner-Up’ Trophy Canister by Benedict Manufacturing Company. An early 20th-century cylindrical metal trophy canister with a domed lid, engraved on the body: ‘CORINTHIAN YACHT CLUB / COW BOY POOL / 1918 / RUNNER-UP’. The lid is set with a circular, non-ferrous metal medallion featuring a central winged horse (Pegasus) in relief, encircled by ‘CORINTHIAN YACHT CLUB / MARBLEHEAD’ and the Latin motto ‘SESI. ET. CETARE / APES. ET. RESPONDERE. PARATI.’ The base of the cup is stamped with the maker’s mark ‘BENEDICT’ above a rhombus-enclosed symbol featuring a cross and the initials ‘B’ and ‘E’, over the number ‘1758’. The item relates to a game of ‘Cowboy Pool,’ a hybrid billiards game using four balls and a race to 101 points, which dates to 1908.
