Korean Elm Wood Bandaji Chest with Iron Mounts
Item Details
A Korean elm wood ‘bandaji’ chest, of rectangular form with a hinged, drop-front panel. The chest is constructed with visible dovetail joints at the corners and stands on four block feet. The top and sides are adorned with hand-forged iron hardware, including circular and rectangular nail heads, corner plates, and a decorative hasp and lock plate. The interior is lined with paper displaying Korean text. The wood shows a dark, aged patina with natural wear, and the iron hardware exhibits oxidation consistent with age.
The construction details, including the visible dovetail joinery and the handcrafted, utilitarian nature of the iron hardware, are consistent with furniture from the late Joseon Dynasty period, likely late 19th to early 20th century. The interior paper lining with Korean text also supports a historical, pre-mid-20th-century date.
