Robert Knipschild was born in Freeport, Illinois, and studied at the University of Wisconsin and the Cranbrook Academy of Art. When he was twenty-three, his work was selected for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s widely acclaimed 1950 exhibition “American Painting Today.” Knipschild received wide recognition during his career, with over seventy-five one man shows and several prizes in important competitive exhibitions. Within a year of the Metropolitan Museum exhibition, Knipschild was added to the roster of the Downtown Gallery, then the leading New York gallery devoted to American Art. He has exhibited in such museums as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Whitney Museum and the Corcoran Gallery, Washington DC; the DeYoung Museum, San Francisco; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and the Art Museum and the Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati. Knipschild was influential as a teacher, especially in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he was the Director of Graduate Studies in Fine Art at the University of Cincinnati from 1967 until his retirement in 1991.
