Born in 1919 in Turin, Italy, architect Paolo Soleri came to the United States in 1947 to study under Frank Lloyd Wright. Due to conflicting views about how American cities should form, Soleri’s time with Wright was brief, but it influenced Soleri’s work, especially in how he incorporated natural elements into his designs. After Soleri completed a commission to build the Ceramica Artistica Solimene, a ceramics factory on Italy’s Amalfi coast, Soleri and his wife purchased five acres of land north of Phoenix, Arizona, on which they built “Cosanti,” his architectural and design studio.
Soleri began making earth-cast ceramics, which included ceramic windbells. They were also created in bronze at an on-site foundry. Soleri was a prolific artist and his bell mobiles and sculptures helped support his theoretic urban design exploration and architectural experimentation. In 1965, Soleri established The Cosanti Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to influencing the way the built world balances with the environment.
