Lewis Henry Meakin was born in Newcastle, England, in 1850. Ten years later his family immigrated to Canada and then settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1863. Meakin began his art studies under Thomas S. Noble at the University of Cincinnati’s McMicken School of Design and then furthered his instruction in Munich, Germany, with the Professors Ludwig Loefftz, Nikolaus Gysis, and Karl Raupp. He spent time in Paris and other parts of Europe in independent study before returning to Cincinnati. In 1887 Meakin began his long teaching career at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. A few years later in 1893 Meakin spent a year in France where he met Alfred Sisley at Moret-sur-Loing and worked in Normandy with William Lamb Picknell.

Aside from his duties at the Art Academy, Meakin was a co-organizer, charter member, and eventual president of the Society of Western Artists, which was founded in 1896 in Chicago. From 1911 until his death, Meakin served as the curator at the Cincinnati Art Museum. In 1913 he was named an associate member of the National Academy of Design. Meakin was also a frequent summer visitor in Camden, Maine, where he established a permanent studio.
