Between 1941 and 1942 Henri Matisse created a large group of drawings that were published in a portfolio he titled Dessins: Thèmes et variations, published in 1943. The portfolio contained 158 drawings, divided into 17 themes, which were labeled A to P, and contained up to 19 variations for each theme. The first drawing in each series was done in charcoal (the dessins du thème), followed by variations drawn in pen or crayon. The group of drawings for this theme was created in October 1941 and focused on a woman reclining in an armchair.
