From included artist statement:

‘This scene is from Louisiana in the beginning of March, just before any of the migrant songbirds arrive from their winter stay in South America and just before the buds explode and leaves conceal the birds…’
‘…From a branch in the old cherry-tree he was announcing his sovereignty in this part of the garden – red is a clear signal. When painting him I wanted to capture that self-confident, almost cheeky facial expression that I thought he had as he sat there signaling that this was his territory.’

- small scratch to frame near top right corner along right edge; scuff to frame along upper left edge; small nick to bottom right corner of frame.
