Chinese Export Armorial and Blue on White Porcelain Tea Caddies, 18th and 19th C

Item Details

The armorial Chinese export porcelain tea caddy, dating to the late 18th century, is finely hand-painted with the Arms of the State of New York, flanked by the allegorical figures of Liberty and Justice, and surmounted by an American bald eagle. Liberty, in a blue gown, holds a staff topped with a liberty cap, while Justice, in yellow robes, is blindfolded and carries balanced scales. The central cartouche bears the monogram “E & E,”likely denoting the original owner, and rests above two red-and-blue shields amid gilt scrollwork and drapery. Produced in Canton for the American market during the early republic, such wares were frequently commissioned by prominent merchants, shipowners, or political figures with strong ties to a specific state. The inclusion of New York’s arms suggests the patron was either a resident of New York or a merchant engaged in its thriving port trade, which by the late 18th century had become one of the principal American gateways for the lucrative China Trade.
