Item Details

Tawaraya Sōtatsu (Japanese, 1570-1643)
The Sacred Fence, Tales of Ise, episode 71
Offset lithograph on paper
Unsigned

In this work an imperial messenger has come into contact with a priestess’s servant. She explains that she desires the man so much that she is willing to jump over the shrine’s forbidden fence and the messenger urges her to do so. Although typically depicted with the woman defiling the grounds, here Tawaraya has decided to convey a sense of longing and desire between the two subjects. The poem he recites to the woman is inscribed in the open space.
